The History of Deaf Camp
Deaf Camp began in the early 90's through the efforts and organization of Pastor Donald Leber. It grew by the efforts of a leader and staff and it's own popularity.
By the late 90's there were two camp sessions and scholarships were plentiful. The staff had grown and it was held at two locations. The Lutheran Deaf Camp Foundation at Pilgrim Lutheran Church for the Deaf had become the nonprofit base for managing funds and staff in support of the camp. It had become a area activity of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church Southwest District. Pastor Leber was Pastor to the deaf for the District.
The last camp was held in 2000 and the subsequent camp was canceled due to the illness of Pastor Leber and his passing to the Lord in 2003. Upon his passing there were contributions to deaf camp and there were funds remaining in the Deaf Camp Foundation.
Pastor Leber participated in a Saturday morning Bible Study group from his home church in Rancho Cucamonga, California. It is the members of that group gave much thought to reviving the deaf camp in Pastor Leber's memory. There are many children of all ages to be served. The Saturday morning group and the deaf camp foundation have merged into one effort to offer deaf camp for 2004.
The camp is now named, Pastor Lebers
Deaf Camp in honor of it's founder (Pastor Donald E. Leber, 1937-2003).
